Tropical Storm Rumbia to bring flood threat to eastern China, Ryukyu Islands into this weekend
A new tropical threat in the western Pacific Ocean will heighten the risk for flooding across Japan's Ryukyu Islands and parts of eastern China over the next several days.
Several tropical systems have battered areas from Japan to Vietnam in recent weeks and newly formed Tropical Storm Rumbia will do the same as it tracks across the East China Sea and into eastern China through Friday.
The storm has already produced nearly 100 mm (4 inches) of rain across the southern and central Ryukyu Islands and additional downpours are expected through Friday as Rumbia pulled tropical moisture into the region after it departs.
Flooding downpours to pivot across Mississippi, Ohio and Tennessee valleys into weekend
An area of downpours with a history of flash flooding will shift eastward to end this week then settle southward this weekend over the central United States.
The batch of rain may be welcomed in some communities but may cause problems for travel and outdoor plans.
A storm will first carry drenching showers and thunderstorms slowly eastward across the central and southern Plains, middle Mississippi Valley and part of the lower Great Lakes into Wednesday night.
Into Wednesday night, the greatest risk of regional flooding will extend across the Ozark Mountains in eastern Oklahoma, northwestern Arkansas and southern Missouri.
A separate batch of showers and thunderstorms may bring damaging wind gusts to parts of South Dakota and Nebraska during Wednesday evening.
Severe storms may affect portions of central and eastern Kansas and southeastern Nebraska on Thursday.
Death toll rises as monsoon flooding worsens in India this week
Flooding will continue to be a significant concern along the west coast of India from southern Maharashtra through Kerala into this weekend.
The death toll has risen to at least 72 in Kerala over the past week as incessant downpours have resulted in flooding, mudslides and transportation chaos. This brings the total flood-related fatalities to more than 200 since May.
More than 50,000 people have been displaced by the flooding, according to Channel News Asia. More than 10,000 kilometers (6,000 miles) of roads and hundreds of homes have been destroyed or damaged across Kerala.

Florida Gov. Rick Scott issued a state of emergency due to impacts of red tide on Monday, Aug. 13.

Tropical Storm Bebinca to bring flooding rainfall to China, Vietnam this week
Tropical Storm Bebinca will bring several days of heavy rainfall to parts of China and Vietnam into this weekend.
The storm, which is currently located just east of the Leizhou Peninsula in the South China Sea, will slowly track westward in the coming days.
This track will take the tropical storm across the Leizhou Peninsula, just north of Hainan, and into the Gulf of Tonkin before making a final landfall in northern Vietnam.
