Abandoned San Domenico Cobham Bar Hotel PUT IT IN THE CURRY
Description
Rumours and legend have surrounded this mysterious part of the A3 since it was vacated in 1990 - but what's the truth?
The site of the former San Domenico restaurant on the A3 at Cobham has been the subject of many a rumour over the years.
Originally the Mayflower hotel, it was in 1976 turned into a restaurant until its closure in 1990. Since then, the site has remained empty - although there have been attempts to spark new life into it.
In 2000, an application to turn the two buildings back into a hotel fell through.
Then in 2005, Elmbridge Borough Council gave permission for the plot to continue to be used as a restaurant and café, together with letting rooms.
Some 10 years later, planning permission was granted for the coach house to be developed for use as a drive through café, along with revisions to vehicle access and parking.
A further application was submitted for a seven-metre totem sign bearing a Costa Coffee logo.
In essence, a whole lot of nothing - so what has ACTUALLY been happening at the site in the fallow years between 1990 and today? And what could still be done there?
