Description

Astronauts Matthew Dominick and Don Pettit demonstrate how spacecraft can transfer rocket fuel, or propellant, in microgravity using water bottles, water, and a fizzy tablet.

Despite advancements in technology, preserving cryogenic fuels in space for extended periods remains a challenge, and direct tank-to-tank fuel transfer has never been performed or tested in space. Robotic Refueling Mission 3, mounted outside the station, tested the tools necessary for fuel transfer and storage. Data from the station’s previous Zero Boil-off Tank (ZBOT) experiments is now being used by participants in NASA’s Human Landing Systems program to guide future spacecraft designs. The next iteration of ZBOT is set to arrive at the station later this year to further this research.
