If you were to think of different things that are green, what would come to your mind? Frogs? Grass? Guacamole? Oscar the Grouch? The Spotify logo? What about Golden Retrievers? No, those are golden, right? Normally you would be correct in saying so. After all, they are named Golden Retrievers.

It might be hard to believe, but there has recently been a Golden Retriever that came out green!
The “Green” Retriever
The adorable puppy was born from her mother, Rio, in the town of Golspie, Scotland. Rio’s caretaker, Louise Sutherland, was stunned by the incredible and ultra rare sight! Talking about when the puppies were born, she said, “The first pup was stuck, so myself and my daughter, Claire, managed to free him and pull him out safely. It was all hands on deck but then as the puppies started to arrive, we noticed that one of the puppies had green fur. We couldn’t believe it.”

It sounds like in the commotion of helping birth all of the puppies, Louis didn’t have the time to notice that one of them was green. But we do know that she was quick to realize that the unique puppy was quite special. She didn’t realize how rare the green color was! Turns out that the condition is so rare that there have only been three other known occurrences with dogs being born green!

To commemorate the rare situation, she named the puppy Forest. And while this name makes me think of a particular Tom Hanks film, it is a fitting name for a green puppy.

Forest was born with eight siblings. It looks like she was the only girl. She was definitely the only green puppy! On their health and how they are doing after birth, Louis said, “They are all great and growing like mushrooms!” It is great to know that little Forest is doing well!
