Graveyard of the Barges PURTON Marina
Description
In Purton near Sharpness in the UK, along the Sevrern Estuary there is a rather unique graveyard of rotting husks of original wooden barge boats which were used in victorian times to transport goods along the canals. Steam powered and horsedrawn along the canals without this vital form of transport the industrial revolution may never have happened. Sadly many of these boats have been left to crumble and blow away on the banks of the severn and there is one very special boat for lovers of the Wiltshire Waterways, especially the kennet and Avon Canal as this was one of the Barges that was built at the Honeytreet Boatyard. This is its final resting place. A memory of our fine and powerful past, now replaced by the motor vehicle as a main form of goods transport inland whilst the massive Barges of the sea which are the container liners and supertankers are in many ways just scaled up versions of these early barges.
