LADDERISM - Bridgwater Infirmary Hospital Somerset
Description
Infirmary is a name given to a smaller hospital in a town or city which deals with accidents and emergencies and can offer beds to stay in until people are well enough to leave.
Here we use a ladder at night to gain entry to this old building which dates back to its creation first as a house in 1813. In 1813 a public meeting decided that a medical institution should be established "for the relief of the labouring poor requiring medical and surgical assistance". In 1820 it was agreed to purchase "a spacious house and garden" in Salmon Lane for £700 (this building). The infirmary was then supported by voluntary contributions. Alterations and additions were made in 1862. The adjoining house to the left was later purchased for £205. Additions were again made in 1876 and 1895.
The Hospital closed in 2014 and has been ransacked by local kids and thieves ever since.
Permission has been granted in 2018 for the demolition and redevelopment of the main building into a 100-bed hotel. To date nobody has shown any interest in buying the building or turning it into a Hotel and under the current Covid climate we wonder if this will ever happen.
