Plans to demolish a former hotel in Newquay and replace it with a block of apartments have been refused.

Cornwall Council's central sub-area planning committee voted to refuse planning permission for the Narrowcliff Hotel to be demolished and replaced with a modern apartment block.

The applicants had wanted to pull down the Edwardian hotel, which closed in 2015, and build 13 apartments in its place.

Plans had previously gone to the council earlier this year but were rejected as there were concerns about the loss of light and no planning benefits in place.

As a result the applicants put their designs through the council's design review panel to try to come up with something that would be acceptable.

However the planning committee was not convinced and said that the planned building would be out of character with the area.

Cornwall councillor for the area Kevin Towill said: "I object as it would be a radical departure from the existing development in that area."

He added that it would have a "detrimental impact" on the landscape and town scape. He also considered that the building would be higher than others in the area.

Mr Towill added: "Narrowcliff is a very important part of Newquay and is extremely high and can be seen for miles around."

Newquay councillor and committee member Joanna Kenny proposed that the application be refused.

She said: "This is four storeys high in an Edwardian terrace that will be completely destroyed by this.

"I propose refusal on the basis of height and mass and not fitting in with the surroundings. It is poor design in the wrong place."

She also added that it was contrary to the emerging Newquay neighbourhood plan and out of character with the area.

The committee agreed to refuse planning permission by 13 votes to one.
