Tropical Disturbance May Become a Tropical Depression Near Mexico and Will Increase Moisture in the U.S. This Week

A broad area of low pressure is being watched for possible tropical development in the Bay of Campeche.
This system could become a tropical depression near Mexico early this week.
Heavy rainfall is expected in parts of southern and eastern Mexico over the next few days.
Moisture from this system will stream into Texas by midweek.
A swirling area of low pressure in the southwest Gulf of Mexico is being watched for possible tropical development, just as the Atlantic hurricane season officially begins.

This system, also known as Invest 91L, is producing moderately intense disorganized showers and thunderstorms over the southwestern Gulf of Mexico. Satellite images do indicate this system has a broad circulation, but it's not well defined at this time.

If this system moves slowly and remains over water for the next couple of days, it could develop into a tropical depression. Wind shear is fairly low over this area and sea-surface temperatures are warm, so conditions are generally favorable for development if it doesn't move over land soon.

If it is able to strengthen enough to be classified as a tropical storm, it would receive the name Barry.

Even if further development does not occur, heavy rainfall is expected over parts of southern and eastern Mexico early this week, which could result in some flooding.

Gusty winds and choppy seas are also likely over the western Gulf of Mexico and eastern Mexico.

Moisture from this system will also flow northward and begin to reach eastern Texas in the first half of this week where it will help enhance shower and thunderstorm activity. The tropical moisture could then spread toward the lower Mississippi Valley later in the week as it interacts with an area of low pressure moving through the southern tier of the United States.

This will make conditions favorable for numerous showers and thunderstorms to develop from the southern Plains into the lower Mississippi Valley, particularly from Wednesday through later this week. Flash flooding will be possible across parts of those regions, but details at this time are uncertain.
