NASA astronauts Kayla Barron and Thomas Marshburn will venture outside the International Space Station on December 2 to replace a faulty antenna system. The antenna recently lost its capacity to send low-rate voice communications and data to mission control flight controllers, albeit this had only a minor impact on operations. The two astronauts will swap it out for a spare.
The spacewalkers are expected to turn their spacesuits on to battery power around 7:10 a.m. EST for a 6.5-hour expedition. Marshburn will be extravehicular crew member 1 (EV 1), wearing a red striped spacesuit, while Barron will be extravehicular crew member 2 (EV 2), wearing a spacesuit without stripes. Matthias Maurer, an astronaut with the European Space Agency, will provide assistance from inside the orbiting laboratory by manoeuvring the Canadarm2 robotic arm that will transport Marshburn. This will be Marshburn's fifth spacewalk, and Barron's first.
