A moment that has been in the making for more than a decade. On Thursday evening, March 17, NASA's Space Launch System (SLS) rocket for the Artemis 1 mission made its maiden journey down the crawlerway at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida.
The initial motion of the rollout occurred just before 6:00 p.m. EDT (22:00 UTC) for an 11-hour voyage to LC-39B. However, when SLS arrived at the pad on Friday morning, it discovered an entirely different, rebuilt launch complex than the previous spacecraft that had used it. The launch represented a crucial milestone for NASA's new Moon rocket, which will take passengers to the lunar area, where they would then — for Artemis 3 — transfer to a waiting SpaceX Starship lunar lander in preparation for humanity's scheduled return to the Moon later this decade.
